The City of Portland Unified Command has been planning and implementing strategies to promote peaceful free speech and public safety on Election Day and the days following. While there is no current information to suggest unrest, we know there is a lot of uncertainty and tension in our community.
This month we have been disseminating information about this effort and building this public order page to provide relevant laws, tips and resources. Beginning Election Day and throughout the week (if needed), we will stand up a Joint Information Center that will bring together our city/county Public Information Officers to provide real-time information via media and on social media.
Here are some tips to increase safety and stay informed:
- Follow the special events X page @PPBAlerts We will be proactively publishing information as needed on this platform. Many local news outlets include this information in their reporting, but there may be a delay, so make sure to follow us. Sign up for our press releases here.
- Be aware of where events are happening and the proximity to your business or home. You can get this information on X as well.
- Businesses should proactively remove sandwich boards, furniture, and construction materials. Secure dumpsters outside of your business prior to events so these objects cannot be used as projectiles, barricades or fuel for fires. For more information on how to prepare, learn about recovery resources, and subscribe to business bulletins, please visit ReadyPDX.org
- Report criminal activity through 9-1-1 if it is an emergency situation or through non-emergency dispatch at (503) 823-3333. Check security footage for criminal activity that could help PPB investigators if an incident occurs and report that as well.
- Be aware that in the event of a significant incident, police service may be delayed. Do not let this deter you from calling 9-1-1 to report an emergency life safety situation but consider there are limited resources even though additional resources will be assigned.
- Help us to send a community-wide message of the shared value of peaceful gathering and speech and that violence and destruction are not acceptable in our community. Thank you in advance for helping us to increase safety for our community.
