In June 2023, the City of Portland announced their support for enhanced security measures at Fred Meyer stores across the city amid an increase in retail theft. In June 2023, Mayor Ted Wheeler joined Fred Meyer executives at a press conference to reveal a new action plan to crack down on crime.
Since the announcement, Fred Meyer stores have experienced a nearly 20% decrease of average incidents per month. Attempted theft at stores is down 36% and total loss is down by 51%.
"This is the type of partnership we are looking to replicate for other grocers, retailers, and other employers throughout the City," Mayor Wheeler said.
The Portland Police Bureau continues to conduct retail theft missions across the city, arresting dozens of people since the beginning of the year and working in conjunction with the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office.
