Members of the media,

Please see a statement below from Mayor Wheeler on Governor Brown’s latest actions to address the spread of COVID-19.

“Governor Brown deserves our thanks for calling a two-week pause to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The pandemic is on a troubling trajectory. It continues to threaten everything we hold dear: our health, our jobs and our families. That’s why I support the Governor’s call for a pause on social activities in Portland where the pandemic continues to spread.

The best defense we have is prevention. We must all do our part to stop the spread of the virus from person to person. We all want to spend more time with friends and family, especially as the holiday season approaches. To ensure we’re able to gather with friends sooner rather than later, we all need to heed the Governor’s direction to minimize our indoor gatherings and limit our social interactions over the next few weeks. This is the right step.

If we come together and follow the public health professionals’ advice we can keep our loved ones safe, get our kids back to school, ourselves back to work, and our friends and families back together. Let’s do the right thing.”
