Members of the media,

Please see a statement below from Mayor Wheeler on Governor Brown’s announcement today of new COVID-19 guidelines:

Governor Brown’s four-week freeze in Multnomah County is a necessary step to reverse the course of the pandemic. Oregon and Multnomah County are seeing their highest rates of COVID-19 ever. Lives are at risk, and we must do our part to stop the spread. This is to protect not only our friends and family, but also healthcare workers, essential employees, and communities that are particularly vulnerable to this virus.

Many Portlanders have made major sacrifices during this pandemic. This freeze, while challenging, will help ensure fewer sacrifices down the road and a strong recovery. And, most importantly, this freeze will save lives.

I believe in the strength and resilience of Portlanders and Oregonians. Continuing to honor public health guidance will help keep our community as safe and healthy as possible through the holidays and into the new year.
