On Wednesday, Sept. 18, Andrea Durbin, Director at the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, will be available from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at City Hall for interviews to provide updates on initiatives and proposals that are in place to address the climate crisis locally.
A Unified Approach to Equitable Climate Action
With such a broad and diverse range of voices urging us to act, the City of Portland seeks to create a climate emergency declaration that brings Portlanders together to foster unity and inclusion, share resources, and prioritize critical next steps. Mayor Ted Wheeler has tasked the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability with collecting community feedback with an emphasis on hearing the perspectives of youth, communities of color and low-income populations. The Climate Emergency Declaration will be one of many actions that Portland City Council will take in the coming months to protect and enhance our home for present and future generations.
Report on 2017 Carbon Emissions and Trends
While the challenge of climate change is more urgent than ever, Portland’s response is not new. Portland was the first city in the U.S. to adopt a climate action plan in 1993. The Bureau of Planning and Sustainability will release a report on the Multnomah County 2017 carbon emissions to give an update on local carbon reduction activities.
Despite 26 years of climate planning and mitigation, local carbon emission reductions in Portland and Multnomah County have plateaued at approximately 15% below 1990 levels. The reductions to date are impressive given population and economic growth since 1990 - 38% more people and 34% more jobs. Director Durbin will be available with Bureau staff to discuss key emission trends and citywide successes.
