Get tips for cutting down on water use during the holidays!

Friends and family coming to visit? More people in your home means more water use. Here are some easy ways to keep water use down during the holiday season:

  1. Gift water savings! We’ve got everyone on your list covered with free water-saving devices. Efficient faucet aerators (the screw-on tip of a faucet), free toilet leak detection dye tablets, and water-saving showerheads will save water and money! Replacing a showerhead with one of our free and efficient WaterSense models can save the average household 2,700 gallons per year and enough energy to power a house for 11 days.
  2. Relax and let your dishwasher do the work. Dishwashers are much more efficient than washing dishes by hand, so put your feet up; you deserve it! This year’s best Energy Star labeled machines use less than 4 gallons a load! (Compared to 2.2 gallons per minute or more on standard faucets).
  3. Embrace the spatula. Encourage guests to scrape plates instead of rinsing before loading into the dishwasher and save all that running water. Festive spatula decorating party anyone? No, just us?
  4. Thaw the turkey in the fridge. If frozen roast anything is on your menu, thaw it in the fridge rather than under running water and save about 2 gallons per minute!
  5. Your toilet may be quiet as a mouse, but are you sure it isn't leaking? Sometimes, water flows through the toilet tank silently, which is why these sneaky leaks are often overlooked. Here’s how to check your toilet for leaks before it gets its holiday workout. And if you’re ready to upgrade, Water Bureau customers can apply for a $50 rebate for replacing a toilet with a new WaterSense-labeled toilet and recycling the old one.
  6. Keep kids entertained with water-saving fun! With Thanksgiving and winter breaks just around the corner, order your free stickers, pencils, five-minute shower timers, and activity books for fun at home or on the go. For the extra curious, we’ve got home water audit kits that your family can use to track down leaks and learn about your water use.

Order your free water-saving devices and kids’ materials online from the Portland Water Bureau Efficiency Program, or call 506-823-4527.

Happy holidays!
