Project overview

The Portland Water Bureau is improving the water system to prepare for future construction projects later this summer. To ensure that residents in South Portland continue to have water service during the future construction, we are adding a large valve to the water system at S Corbett Ave and S Mitchell St.

We have to turn off water in the water mains (pipes) to do this work but want to make sure local residents are not out of water for the duration of the project. We are changing how water flows through your neighborhood to ensure you have water all weekend. However, this change in flow will also change the water pressure delivered to this area. Some residents may experience low water pressure all weekend.

Project dates

Construction to install the valve will start the morning of Friday June 20, 2025 and last through Sunday June 22, 2025. Water pressure changes are expected during these construction days.

What to expect

  • Starting the morning of Friday June 20 to Sunday June 22, you may have lower water pressure.
  • We do not expect you to lose all water. Upper floors of tall buildings will experience the lowest water pressure.
  • Your street may be closed to all but local traffic. Crews will make sure you can enter and exit your driveway.
  • You may experience noise, dust and traffic delays while we conduct this work.

Who to contact

If you experience no water, immediately report it to us! Call 503-823-4874 extension 1.

What to do

If you are experiencing low water pressure over the weekend, here are some temporary actions you can take to help the water pressure in your household, building, and neighborhood:

  • Use less water during breakfast and dinner times, when water use is highest
  • Limit outdoor watering or water at nighttime
  • Do not run the dishwasher and washing machine at the same time
  • Run your dishwasher or washing machine overnight instead of during the day
  • Take shorter showers or, if water pressure is very low, take showers during times when water use is lower, such as very early morning, midday, or later in the evening
