How to stop all water charges
To stop all water charges, the water service (meter and box removed, service capped at the water main, furnishing zone restored) must be permanently removed, "killed" and disconnected from the main.
The base charge to remove a 2" or smaller water service starts at $7,186.00.
If you are paying to have a new, larger meter installed at the same time a 2” or smaller meter is being killed, we will waive up to $7,186.00 of the cost to kill the smaller service.
Contact Water Service at 503-823-7368 (option 5) to determine the cost of removal for a specific location.
Please note that permanent removal of a water service may decrease the value of your property, as it would be necessary to pay installation fees and potentially additional system development charges to add a new service in the future.
What's the difference between a meter "kill" and stopping service?
Type of Action | Who to contact? | Fees associated | Action to meter | Do you still get a water bill? |
---|---|---|---|---|
Meter Kill | Water Service, email at waterservice@portlandoregon.gov or call 503-823-7368 (option 5) | Ordinance rate of $7,186.00 for 2" and smaller or Site Specific Estimate | Service capped at the main, meter and box removed, furnishing zone restored | Water bill discontinues |
Stop Service | Customer Services (see contact info below) | No cost to stop service. Contact us to request meter turned off. | Still connected to main. Usually meter and box still present. | Water bill continues to Property Owner |
