Benefits of Trees
The City of Portland is invested in planting more street trees, particularly in priority service areas, because trees are a community resource that provide many services to residents, including:
- filtering the air of pollutants and absorbing stormwater
- providing shade, cooler temperatures, and lower energy bills
- creating safer streets by slowing down traffic
- helping block noise
- reducing stress
- creating more walkable neighborhoods
Street Right-of-Way Types
Street trees are planted in the public right-of-way along public roads. The right-of-way is usually the first 8-20 feet from the edge of the roadway to the start of private property. This may include a curb, a planting strip, and a sidewalk, but Portland also has underimproved roads that lack one or all of these elements.
