Caring for Portland trees is a great way to support a healthy, thriving city.
Overview
Within these pages, you'll find support for every stage of tree care, including choosing the right species, planting correctly, nurturing young trees, and protecting trees from diseases and pests and a changing climate. You'll also find essential pruning techniques and how to find qualified local tree care providers. If you're hiring an arborist, we have advice to make the process easier.
Urban Forestry Tree Care Programs
- Street Tree Care: A new program to care for Portland's street trees.
- Private Tree Care Assistance: Tree care program for income-qualifying homeowners.
- Free tree planting and care: The City plants trees on qualifying streets and private properties each year, focusing on neighborhoods with lower tree canopy. Each tree comes with free watering and care for the first three years.
Funded by the Portland Clean Energy Community Benefits Fund.
Tree Care and Permitting
Tree care may require a permit. These resources can help you understand the tree code and permit requirements.
Tree Permits

- Learn about protecting trees during construction.
- Overgrown trees and shrubs endanger us all when they block our view of traffic signs, pedestrians, or other vehicles. Learn more about rules for street trees (trees in the right of way), including pruning permits, and how to find help and report issues.
- Determine if your tree is in a specially regulated overlay zone or plan district. In certain environmental overlay zones and plan districts, private property trees of any size may require a permit for removal.
Title 11 (Tree Code)
- Title 11 (Tree Code) is the governing ordinance for trees in the City of Portland.

Other Local Tree Care Resources
- Leaf Day: The City sweeps districts with the highest concentration of mature street trees and leaves. Leaf Day is FREE. Find out if you're in a district and what your Leaf Day schedule is this year.
- Buy City Compost: Portland composts more than 5,000 tons of leaves collected through the City's Leaf Day program each year that can be purchased. Removing leaves from our streets is critical to keeping streets safe from clogged storm drains, flooded intersections and slippery streets.
