  • Native to eastern North America.

  • Height can exceed 100’.

  • Leaves are green on both sides, 4-10” long, heartshaped, and toothed.

  • Flowers are small and pale yellow in late June; 5 blooms per cluster suspended from a leaf-like bract.

  • Seeds are round and remain on bract into fall.

  • Uncommon in Portland.
