Native to eastern North America.
Height can exceed 100’.
Leaves are green on both sides, 4-10” long, heartshaped, and toothed.
Flowers are small and pale yellow in late June; 5 blooms per cluster suspended from a leaf-like bract.
Seeds are round and remain on bract into fall.
Uncommon in Portland.
