Thousand Cankers Disease

Thousand cankers disease is caused by a fungus that is transmitted by adult bark beetles. This disease has been identified relatively recently. The fungus causes cankers to develop in the inner bark of the infected tree, disrupting nutrient flows to the tree. Thousand cankers disease can cause the infected tree to die. The fungus has been confirmed throughout Oregon, but there currently is no quarantine against walnut wood in the state.

Susceptible species

Black walnut and Hinds walnut

Rapid diagnosis and removal of infected trees is currently the best method to control thousand cankers disease. Avoid buying, transporting, or storing walnut firewood.
