Sassafras
FAMILY: LAURACEAE
Native to eastern and midwestern United States and Canada.
Height is usually 30-60'.
Leaves can have one or two lobes, or no lobes, often on the same tree. Rarely, three, four, and five lobed leaves will occur.
Sassafras roots were used to make root beer before being banned.
Dried ground leaves are used to make a Filé powder to flavor traditional gumbo recipes.
