Ash Tree Pruning Restrictions End for Winter

Label: News article
With fall's arrival, the active season for Emerald ash borer winds down. With reduced risk of spread during cooler months, the City of Portland ash tree pruning and removal moratorium lifts.
Published

The annual moratorium, in place each year from April 1 to September 30th, helps slow the spread of the emerald ash borer, a destructive beetle that kills ash trees. All ash species (Fraxinus species) are at risk from emerald ash borer, including the native Oregon ash (Fraxinus latifolia).

Urban Forestry reminds property owners to:

This is a great time to hire a tree care professional to assess the health and safety of any ash trees on your property. Certified arborists can identify and address potential issues and help protect your trees. Urban Forestry offers an online list of local tree care providers. Listed companies meet the following qualifications:

  • Completed the City's Local Tree Care Providers Workshop within the last year.
  • Have a certified arborist or similarly credentialed tree professional on staff.
  • No documented tree code violations or permitting issues in the past year.
  • Have an active Portland business license.

To report potentially affected ash trees, please email trees@portlandoregon.gov or you can call 503-823-TREE (8733) and choose option #3.
