Native from New York and Pennsylvania to southwestern Ontario and Minnesota, and south to Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.
Height usually to 40-50', national champion in Maryland recorded at 97'.
Bipinnately compound leaf.
Fruit is a lima bean-like leathery pod, 'Espresso' cultivar is seedless.
Trees are either male or female.
Rare in Portland.
