Fun at Arbor Day at McCoy Park
This past Saturday, Urban Forestry and community tree lovers met at McCoy Park to celebrate Portland’s Arbor Day. One hundred community members came out to plant trees, make tree-themed arts and crafts, and connect with community partners. Community members even gave great names to the trees that were planted like Linus and Pondy the Lucky. Commissioner Dan Ryan made an appearance to celebrate with us, and Urban Forestry’s very own Jenn Cairo dressed up as an Emerald Ash Borer to present Connecting Canopies with the Bill Naito Community Trees Award.
In addition to the festivities, we had a Yard Tree Giveaway event happening on the other side of the park. We were able to give away 178 free trees to Portland property owners. Other highlights included bucket truck rides with Urban Forestry arborists, face painting with Mystique’s Fancy Faces, and story time with Nikki Brown Clown. There were Somali samosas, street tacos, and delicious horchata. We are so grateful to everyone who came out to celebrate with us and hope you had as much fun as we did.
Finally, we want to extend a special thank you to all our community partners for this event: the NNE Library Services Extension Team, the Kenton Library, Home Forward, Verizon Community Learning Center with Hacienda CDC, Village Gardens, Trees for Life Oregon, the Heritage Tree Committee, Connecting Canopies, and the Charles Jordan Community Center.
