Native evergreen trees anchor Portland and the Pacific Northwest. They connect us to Portland's history, thrive in our climate, and offer year‑round beauty and homes for wildlife. Large, mature trees provide far more cooling, shading, and carbon storage than small trees, making them especially valuable.

Because large evergreens take many decades to reach full size, they are extremely difficult to replace once lost. That's why the City prioritizes planting native trees, large evergreens, and protecting the mature trees we already have.

If you plant a tree on your property or in the right‑of‑way, choosing a large native evergreen is one of the most effective ways to support a healthier, cooler, and more resilient Portland.
