Oregon Department of Forestry Urban (ODF) and PP&R Urban Forestry are excited to partner with the PNW-ISA Chapter present a Trunk Injection Seminar on Thursday, June 11th at 8:15 am at the Charles Jordan Community Center (Small Gym) & University Park, 9009 N Foss Ave, Portland, OR 97203

EAB Overview and Status in Oregon
Kat Bethea & Matt Mills, ODF

This session will provide a high-level overview of signs and symptoms of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), how to report EAB in the state, deliver updates on the locations and status of current EAB populations in Oregon, and review management recommendations for this invasive pest.

EAB Management in Portland
Anya Moucha, PP&R Urban Forestry

Discussion of City of Portland's EAB strategy including treatment and proactive removal/replacement. Will also discuss permitting changes related to ash trees and ash wood waste disposal.

ISA BMPs for Tree Injection
Alison Herrel, ODF/PNW-ISA

In 2022, a team of university scientists and industry experts collaborated to review and update the ISA BMP – Tree Injection. This publication is a consensus document intended to serve as a guide for arborists to create common standards for tree injection in the green industry. We will review and discuss the updated best practices for performing tree injections. 

Pesticide License Requirements

Are you thinking about getting your pesticide license so you can do EAB treatments? Are you sure you have the correct license required for your work? Oregon Department of Agriculture will review types of licenses, license categories, policies, and answer questions regarding state pesticide regulations.

Breakout Groups

Tree Injection Demonstrations

Representatives from Portland Urban Forestry will provide demonstrations on how they conduct treatment on Portland's park ash trees. You will learn tips and tricks for approaching emamectin benzoate trunk injections.

Tree Injection Comparison

Discussion of different types of injection systems on the market. Injection systems from Rainbow, Ecoscience and ArborJet, will be on site to see in person.

Proactive Tree Removal & Replacement

Discussion of Portland Urban Forestry's EAB management strategy to proactively reduce select ash trees.

PRESENTERS:

Matt Mills (he/him) and Kat Bethea (they/them) are Emerald Ash Borer Specialists with the Oregon Department of Forestry. They work in the Urban and Community Forest Program, where they assist municipalities, communities, and local organizations prepare for the arrival of EAB in their area by providing educational outreach and information on management and mitigation.  

Alison Herrell (she/her) is a Community Assistance Forester with the Urban & Community Forestry Program at Oregon Department of Forestry where she provides technical, educational, and financial support to community partners. She is also part-time Instructor at Portland Community College where she teaches Introduction to Tree Care, Integrated Pest Management and Insect, Weeds, & Disease Identification. She holds a B.A. in Biology from Valparaiso University and an M.S. in Environmental Science from Indiana University. She is an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist, TRAQ holder, and pesticide applicator in Oregon. She has been in the industry since 2010 with broad experience including tree inventory, climbing, PHC applications, research, and education & outreach. Alison is also the current President for Pacific Northwest Chapter of ISA.

Anya Moucha (she/her) is the Forest Pests and Pathogens Coordinator with Portland Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry. In her role, Anya guides the city's response to forest health threats like Emerald Ash Borer, Dutch Elm Disease, and Mediterranean Oak Borer. A certified arborist, she has a background in landscape architecture and environmental policy.

Presentations will also feature speakers from Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Program and Portland Urban Forestry.
