Portland has been celebrating Arbor Day since 1889 - bringing communities together to recognize the importance and value of trees. The trees of our city provide essential services - making a healthier and more equitable place to live for all Portlanders.
Due to our changing climate, Portland’s hot dry summers have made it more difficult for trees planted in April to succeed. By moving Arbor Day to October, we can plant new trees and take advantage of our nice wet winter months to help them get established.

Give Back to the Trees
The life of an urban tree is not easy! Healthy trees that live to their full lifespan are the best trees for our community well-being. The 30-45 minutes you take to plant a tree will affect the rest of its life, and by providing additional tender care to middle and older aged trees we can give them their best chance at full maturity!
Tree Care - Help existing park trees to improve their quality of life. Work includes light pruning, weeding, and mulching.
Tree Planting - Plant trees at the park, following proper planting techniques helps ensure a healthy tree. Work includes digging in urban soils, preparing tree rootball, mulching, staking, and watering.
