Portland Parks & Recreation's Urban Forestry partners with community groups to give away thousands of free yard trees to Portlanders
Program Overview
Every fall, Portland residents can receive up to three free trees to plant on their private property. This includes yards, places of
worship, and businesses.
Our goal is to grow a healthier, greener city—together. We offer large native evergreens, heat-tolerant trees for hotter summers, flowering trees, nut-bearing trees, and trees rich with autumn color!
Yard Trees can now be used to fulfill your removal and replant tree permit!
Tree planting is funded by the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF).

Yard Tree Giveaway Registration Form
Yard Tree Giveaway registration is open! We are giving away 4,500 trees for Portlanders to plant on their private property.
Register now and pick up your tree and mulch at one of our six giveaway events this fall. Planting is available for people who need an accommodation.
Eligibility
You're eligible if:
- The trees will be planted at an address within Portland city limits
- The trees can be planted in a front, side or backyard. They cannot be used as street trees (the space between the curb and the side walk).
- You will allow Urban Forestry to check on your tree during the summer as part of a study
Our Partners
Urban Forestry's Yard Tree Giveaway program aims to provide 4,500 FREE TREES to Portlanders this fall, with a focus on neighborhoods with low tree canopy. Urban trees play a vital role in creating healthier, safer communities. Bringing trees to these areas that need them the most is one of the best ways to improve public and environmental health outcomes.
Partner organizations were selected because they are connected to underserved communities and people living in our priority service areas. Partnerships help advance the Yard Tree Giveaway goal of increasing tree canopy where it is most needed. With funding made possible by the Portland Clean Energy Fund, the Yard Tree Giveaway Partners Program is working with the following community organizations:
The Coalition of Black Men
The Coalition of Black Men (COBM) is a Portland-based nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of life for Black youth, families, and the broader community through mentorship, education, health, and economic empowerment. Our mission is to equip individuals with the tools, support, and opportunities needed to achieve long term stability and success. COBM's core programming includes the Dream Bigger Mentor Program, which provides structured youth mentorship. We foster community economic development by strengthening Black-owned businesses and increasing community resilience through sustainability-driven place based economic development, and culturally specific advocacy.
Columbia Slough Watershed Council
Columbia Slough Watershed Council (CSWC)'s Mission is to protect and enhance the Columbia Slough and its watershed through community engagement, education, and restoration. We provide resources for watershed residents to access, learn about, and enjoy natural areas in North and Northeast Portland.
People of Color Outdoors
People of Color Outdoors (POCO) is a Portland based nonprofit that has a mission to help Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and White parents of BIPOC children deepen their natural connection with nature in a supportive community. We do that by offering an average of 60 outdoor events of all kinds, throughout the state of Oregon and in the SW area of Washington. POCO hosts the POCO Guardians, an environmental education and leadership program for children, and has offered leadership training to members in the areas of fishing, wellness walks, kayaking, and birding. POCO’s Founder, Pamela Slaughter, was the first recipient of the Joey Pope Award for innovative and impactful leadership in the Portland Metro area. POCO has a long-term goal of building a retreat center with a focus on environmental and cultural education and events.
The Rosewood Initiative
The Rosewood Initiative is a place-based nonprofit that serves as a community anchor and resource hub, and fosters community building across East Portland neighborhoods. Through the Rosewood Community Hub site on 141st & Stark, their goal is to improve access to support systems that build economic stability and upward mobility, increase health and wellness, and strengthen community resilience.
Southeast Uplift
Southeast Uplift Neighborhood Coalition is a nonprofit and nonpartisan civic organization that has been building informed, inclusive, and participatory neighborhoods since 1968. Today, we serve as the district coalition office that helps grassroots organizations build their capacity to serve communities throughout the 19 neighborhoods that make up District 3 in inner Southeast Portland and parts of Northeast. Residents throughout District 3 are invited to participate in SEUL's Climate Justice Action Committee. The YTG partnership is this committee's flagship project for the coming fiscal year, focusing on the 8 neighborhoods prioritized for increasing tree canopy in District 3
