Japanese Cinnamon Tree

About Cinnamomum japonicum:

  • This is not the source of cinnamon spice, but the leaves and bark have a similar smell to camphor.
  • Native to southeastern Asia including the southern parts of Japan, China, Korea, and Taiwan.
  • Broadleaf evergreen tree that can grow to 30' when mature.
  • Fruits are small, black and drop shaped with a hard seed inside. 
  • Oil from the bark, leaves, and fruit are used in soaps and perfumes.
  • Only two mature trees found along City streets.
