Japanese Cinnamon Tree
FAMILY: LAURACEAE
About Cinnamomum japonicum:
- This is not the source of cinnamon spice, but the leaves and bark have a similar smell to camphor.
- Native to southeastern Asia including the southern parts of Japan, China, Korea, and Taiwan.
- Broadleaf evergreen tree that can grow to 30' when mature.
- Fruits are small, black and drop shaped with a hard seed inside.
- Oil from the bark, leaves, and fruit are used in soaps and perfumes.
- Only two mature trees found along City streets.
