  •  Native to the eastern half of the U.S.
  • Can attain over 100’ in height.
  • Leaves are large for a birch, shiny on top and coarsely scalloped on edges.
  • Flowers are male and female catkins on same limb.
  • Bark on mature tree is unbirchlike, black and longitudinally fissured. Upper branches look birchlike.
  • Very rare in Portland.
