  • Leaflets are 5 and make a palmate leaf.

  • Flowers are pale yellow, 7”-long erect clusters in May.

  • Nut husks have no prickles and are pear-shaped.

  • Bark is varied-colored in plates and scales.

  • Fall color is orange.

  • Uncommon in Portland
