Emergency routes, explained
In severe weather, PBOT works to keep important transit lines and emergency routes open. These are the most critical roads for our city’s police and fire stations, hospitals, schools, frequent bus routes, our downtown core, and major business districts. These roads are known as “snow and ice” routes and total about one-third of our entire street grid.
On these routes, PBOT’s mission is to keep at least one passable lane open in each direction. This is so vehicles with front-wheel drive or traction devices can get through.
Depending on the storm, it can take up to three 12-hour shifts for crews to treat our routes with anti-icer. In a major snowfall, it can take crews up to one 12-hour shift to plow these routes.

There are currently no chain advisories on city streets in Portland.
Road closures
We list roads closed because of winter weather only. Common reasons for closing roads are downed trees or power lines, vehicles blocking the road, or roads too icy to travel on. This page is updated on an emergency basis. We only list closures in the order they come in.
Visit our Winter Weather Center for a full interactive map of our snow and ice routes and active road closures (English-language only).
