How to avoid fees and fines when using BIKETOWN

  • End rides at BIKETOWN stations whenever possible
    • There is a $1 fee for ending a ride at a non-BIKETOWN station (like at a public bike rack) within the service area
      • There are two exception to this rule:
        1. Ending a ride in the portion of the service area known as the Superhub Zone (east of 72nd Ave, seen in green on the map below).
        2. Ending a ride at a bike corral that's designated as a station (find these in the BIKETOWNpdx mobile app)
    • Keep in mind that your $10 monthly ride credit can be used to cover $1 out of station parking fees, however, this will result in less credit for ride time.
    • To maximize your $10 monthly ride credit and to avoid out of station parking fees, we encourage users to end rides at BIKETOWN stations in the service area or in the Super Hub zone (east of 72nd Ave).
BIKETOWN service area map
  • Never end rides outside of the service area or in a park
    • There is a $5 fine when you end a ride outside the service areaor in a park. This is known as an "outside of service area” fine.
    • These fines are charged to the payment method attached to your BIKETOWN account (and is not able to be pulled from your $10 monthly ride credit).
    • To avoid such fines, we encourage users to end rides at official BIKETOWN stations within the service area.
  • Always lock your bike at the end of each ride
    • Not locking a bike leaves bikes vulnerable to theft and also gives someone the opportunity to take a ride on your account.
    • To avoid a warning and a potential $5 fine, always lock the bike securely to a bike rack or to a secure pole when not in use.
  • Be aware of potential charges for Buddy Rides
    • There may be times when you want to go for a bike ride with a friend. BIKETOWN's Buddy Ride feature enables you to unlock and pay for friend's bike ride. Please know that Buddy Rides will pull from the ride credit and/ or payment method associated with your account. As a BIKETOWN for All member, your 1st Buddy Ride per month is charged at the BIKETOWN for All rate (free to unlock and 5¢ per minute). If you take 2 or more Buddy Rides in a month, your buddy's rides will be charged at the normal BIKETOWN rate ($1 to unlock and 30¢ per minute).
