See your city in a NEW way

Label: Information
Discover what makes Portland uniquely yours from a bicycle, with resources and ideas for experiencing your city on two wheels.

Biking helps shape your sense of place, and deepens what it means to feel at home in Portland. Whether it's the smell of fresh rain, music drifting from a plaza, or stumbling upon treasures in a free pile, taking a ride on a bike activates your senses and makes you see your city in a NEW way.

Discover a new side of Portland

On a bike, you move at just the right pace to notice the details that cars rush past: colorful storefronts, hidden murals, blooming gardens, and delightful surprises around every corner. You might find yourself stopping for a latte at a cozy coffee café, browsing a second-hand shop, or quite literally pausing to smell the roses.

Biking is the best way to see Portland, and we're here to help you do it.

Wave to a stranger

Being on a bike doesn't only bring you closer to your environment, it also connects you with other people. It's not uncommon to make eye contact with another human when you're biking. Whether saying hello to a person walking, wheeling through a street game of basketball, or smiling at another person biking in the pouring rain, this is your community – and you're part of it.

Go on a spur of the moment ride

When inspiration strikes and you don't have a bike with you, check out a BIKETOWN bike. With the electric boost, you'll get to where you want to go in no time. The BIKETOWN annual membership is the most cost-effective way to ride.

Plan a route using PBOT's Bike & Walk maps. The City-wide map shows you the entire bike network, as well as different types of infrastructure: from standard bike lanes to protected bike lanes, and multi-use paths – choose a route that's comfortable for you. Use the Portland Interactive Bike Map to more easily scroll and navigate the map on your mobile phone.

Discovering new neighborhoods is easy with our suggested bike rides around Portland. These rides are typically 6 to 10-miles in length and on lower-stress routes in different Portland neighborhoods – plus they're great for beginners and families with children.

Infrastructure helps you go

Portland has more than 400 miles of bike infrastructure, including 100 miles of Neighborhood Greenways, making it easy to get most places easily and safely by bike. Neighborhood Greenways are low traffic streets where people walking and biking are given priority. Route finding signs and markings to help you find your way.

Learn more about Neighborhood Greenways.

PBOT has also upgraded its' street lighting so that you can be seen while seeing your city in a new way. Find out more about PBOT's street lighting improvements.
