Metro's Safe Routes to School Program

The ability for children to be able to walk, bike, or roll to school safely benefits children, their families, and their communities. That’s why Metro’s Safe Routes to School program offers mini grants to individual schools through their Regional Travel Options Sponsorships program.

This program prioritizes materials and services that support transportation focused events, education, and outreach activities. Some examples of resources that can be funded through these grants include high-visibility vests, helmets, and event materials.

These mini-grants come in the form of Regional Travel Options Mini-Grants (up to $5,000) as well as SRTS Micro-Grants ($500). Generally, Regional Travel Options Mini-Grants are open to all applicants eligible for Regional Travel Options funding whereas Safe Routes to School Micro-Grants are only open to individual schools or nonprofit parent-teacher organizations. For more information about applying for transportation grants through Metro, please visit the Metro Safe Routes to School page.

Oregon Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School Program

Much like the Portland Bureau of Transportation Safe Routes to School program, the Oregon Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School program includes education, construction, planning and equity work offered through collaboration between many agencies, community members, and practitioners to promote livable, vibrant communities that increase physical activity, social connection, and educational opportunities around walking, rolling, and biking.

The Oregon Safe Routes to School Program provides grant funding and technical assistance to communities across Oregon. Oregon Safe Routes to School has multiple resources on their page to check out if you’d like to do more in your community related to transportation.
