School zone awareness

Information
Two drawings of a school bear mascot and a stick person hold signs that say Back 2 School and Watch 4 Kids! Near a pink icon of a school. A blue street runs by and there are three colorful houses on the opposite side of the street.
Make sure neighbors and surrounding community are aware that students and families are walking, biking, and rolling to and from school. This page includes ideas on how to spread the word.

Many people travel near your school every day who may not have school-age children. Use these ideas to bring awareness that students and families are walking, biking, and rolling to and from school!

Commuter awareness day

Use your school mascot to remind commuters to watch for families walking and rolling to school during arrival and dismissal times.

Tip: If your school is hosting a clean-up day or other events, have your mascot or volunteers wave and hold signs at the location with the most traffic.

Safety campaign

Remind drivers of their role in keeping kids safe in our neighborhoods with signs encouraging safe behaviors. Create your own campaign and have students design signs or banners, or use some of the materials below.

"Drive Like It" safety campaign

The campaign's core message: "School routes are everywhere. Drive like it." is supported by safety data, local research, and focus groups to remind drivers that as school returns in-person, our kids are walking and rolling in-and-around our streets and communities.

Access the campaign safety materials, available in six languages, by visiting oregonsaferoutes.org/drivelikeit.
