NE Shaver Sidewalk Project Design Update

Three students walk in the road on NE Shaver Street next to mud puddles.
Existing conditions. Three students wearing backpacks and a yellow school bus in the distance make their way towards Parkrose Middle School along NE Shaver Street. Pooling water, mud and parked cars take up space on the shoulder of the street as the students walk in the road.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has been working to design and construct a sidewalk on the south side of NE Shaver Street between NE 102nd and 115th avenues.

As design continues, communications will increase via this email list and project website.

In the coming months, the project manager will contact homeowners and residents adjacent to the project area for conversations specific to those properties. In the meantime, please reach out with questions or concerns. Contact information is included below.

Planned project elements include:

  • 6-foot wide concrete sidewalk, 6-foot wide furnishing zone (parking strip), and curb on the south side of NE Shaver
  • Paved driveway connections
  • Curb ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Street trees planted in the furnishing zone, per Urban Forestry’s Title 11 code
  • New or updated stormwater systems to improve drainage and filter pollutants
  • Updated street lighting between NE 112th and 115th avenues

The project website was recently updated with general information about tree protection and planting, stormwater, street parking, and funding.

Project Background

This segment of NE Shaver Street was identified as an important connection for students and families attending Parkrose Middle and High Schools in the Parkrose School District. It is also a TriMet bus route. Walking routes and challenging connections were highlighted by school communities during a Safe Routes to School outreach process held throughout 2017.

You can read more about the planning process and see a map of citywide project locations and routes on this webpage

PBOT's Safe Routes to School program used information from the 2017 planning process to apply for $2 million in grant funding from the Oregon Department of Transportation's (ODOT) Competitive Infrastructure Grant program to build the sidewalk. Local match from the Fixing Our Streets 10-cent gas tax program and additional financial support from the Portland Clean Energy Benefits Fund are helping make this project a reality.
