What's Happening Now? (June 2024)

This project is currently cancelled after PBOT took into account community feedback from Lent Elementary School, residents on SE Steele, homeowners on SE Steele, and community groups.

Project Description

SE Steele Street was identified as an important connection for students and families attending Lent Elementary School in the Franklin cluster of Portland Public Schools district. In 2023, students not enrolled in a language immersion program at the Lent campus will attend Marysville School instead, further confirming this as a helpful link for families and neighbors accessing Lents Park.

Walking routes and challenging connections were initially highlighted by school communities during a Safe Routes to School outreach process held throughout 2017. You can read more about the planning process and see a map of citywide project locations and routes at SafeRoutesProjects.com.

Here are the planned project elements:

1. Build two new ADA corner ramps on the northeast and southeast corners of SE 92nd Avenue and Steele

2. Build new sidewalk between SE 92nd Avenue and the Interstate 205 path on the north side of Steele.

These components are still in the early stages of design and may change based on funding available, or challenges that come up with further review. This page will reflect those changes as necessary.

Public Involvement

2024

  • February- PBOT met with Lent Elementary principal and vice principal to discuss the project
  • May- Project notification letters were sent to impacted homeowners and tenants who live on SE Steele between 92nd and I-205 (20 letters)

Project Funding

The Fixing Our Streets 10-cent citywide gas tax was approved by voters in May 2016 and again in May 2020. Safe Routes to School was allocated funding by Fixing Our Streets for school access improvements across Portland.

Project paid for by Fixing Our Streets: Your dime at work.

The map below shows the location of this SE Steele sidewalk infill project. PBOT understands that this map is not accessible for users of assistive technology. Due to the complexity of the information the map provides and the currently available map platforms at the city, it will take some time to make adjustments.  We thank you for your patience while we work on a technology-based solution. As we work toward providing accessibility, please contact email address and/or program name phone number to reach PBOT staff who can assist you to get the data you need from the map. You can also contact PBOT’s ADA Coordinator at Lisa.Strader@portlandoregon.gov or at 503-823-5703.

Again, thank you for your understanding and patience.
