What's Happening Now?
The project team recently completed the 60% design milestone, which includes elevations that help inform stormwater drainage and accessible curb ramp details. Staff recently sent letters to property owners and residents living adjacent to the project area with information about planned changes. Reach out to the project manager with questions or concerns, or if you haven't received a letter.
Project Design
Current design includes:
- A 10-foot-wide sidewalk with space for people walking and biking. The sidewalk is planned for the west side of 174th Avenue between SE Kelly Street and the community gardens, and between Centennial Christian Church and SE Francis Street.
- Marked crossings and curb ramps at SE Haig Drive, SE Marie Street, and mid-block in front of Powell Butte Elementary school.
- Street trees planted in the 3.5-foot furnishing zone between the street and sidewalk.
- Streetlighting added near crossings with deficient lighting levels.
- Stormwater improvements.
Project Background
This segment of SE 174th Avenue was identified as an important connection for students and families attending Powell Butte Elementary School in the Centennial School District. It is also a route used by Centennial Middle and High School students. Sidewalk infill here will also support a better walking connection for neighbors accessing Lynchwood Park. Walking routes and challenging connections were highlighted by school communities during a Safe Routes to School outreach process held throughout 2017.

Project Funding
This project was made possible by funding from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Competitive Infrastructure Grant awarded in 2023. Portland's SRTS program received $1.9 million in grant funding to support this project.
PBOT is responsible for a 20% funding match, which is being provided by General Fund dollars allocated to the Safe Routes to School program for use on traffic safety projects in East Portland.
