Memorial Day closure

Most City of Portland offices will be closed Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day.

SE 174th Ave Sidewalk Infill (Kelly to Francis streets)

In Planning
Construction crews will build sidewalk on the west side of SE 174th Avenue to connect neighborhood streets to Powell Butte Elementary School. New crosswalks and ADA ramps will also be installed at SE Haig Dr and SE Marie St.
On a sunny day with blue skies, a two-lane roadway is shown with only a small gravel shoulder. On the property-side of the shoulder are large green shrubs that encroach into the walking space. Weeds and grass are growing next to the shrubs and there are tire marks in the gravel.

What's Happening Now?

Grant funds to build this sidewalk project were awarded to the Portland Safe Routes to School program in 2023. The project team is in the early stages of design.

Project Background and Description

This segment of SE 174th Avenue was identified as an important connection for students and families attending Powell Butte Elementary School in the Centennial School District. It is also a route used by Centennial Middle and High School students and families. Sidewalk infill here will also support a better walking connection for neighbors accessing Lynchwood Park. Walking routes and challenging connections were highlighted by school communities during a Safe Routes to School outreach process held throughout 2017.

You can read more about the planning process and see a map of citywide project locations and routes at

Planned project elements will be shared on this page when they become available.

Project Funding

This project was made possible by funding from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Competitive Infrastructure Grant awarded in 2023. Portland's SRTS program received $1.9 million in grant funding to support this project.

PBOT is responsible for a 20% funding match, which is being provided by General Fund dollars allocated to the Safe Routes to School program for use on traffic safety projects in East Portland.

The map below shows the location of this SE 174th Avenue sidewalk infill project. PBOT understands that this map is not accessible for users of assistive technology. Due to the complexity of the information the map provides and the currently available map platforms at the city, it will take some time to make adjustments.  We thank you for your patience while we work on a technology-based solution. As we work toward providing accessibility, please contact email address and/or program name phone number to reach PBOT staff who can assist you to get the data you need from the map. You can also contact PBOT’s ADA Coordinator at or at 503-823-5703.

Again, thank you for your understanding and patience.
