Project Background and Description

Recent traffic counts show the segment of SE 117th Ave between E Burnside and SE Market as having a majority of drivers traveling 8-12 miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 20 mph, even in the Ventura Park school zone.

  • Speed bumps and cushions are used when data shows more than 15% of drivers are going more than 5 miles per hour over the speed limit.
  • Speed bumps and cushions encourage drivers to slow down, making streets safer and more comfortable for people walking, biking, and traveling in the neighborhood.

  • If funding is available, traffic calming projects are often installed near schools or where many people walk and bike. This segment of SE 117th Ave is a key connection for Ventura Park and Mill Park Elementary Schools in the David Douglas School District. It also connects neighbors to Ventura Park.
    • This segment of SE 117th Ave is a Primary Investment Route for Ventura Park and Mill Park schools.
    • The Safe Routes to School Primary Investment Routes were identified by Portland school communities during an outreach process held throughout 2017. You can read more about the planning process and see a map of citywide project locations and routes at SafeRoutesProjects.com.

Project Funding

In November of 2021, Safe Routes to School received a General Fund allocation from Portland City Council to continue building safety projects, specifically in East Portland. This project is made possible by those funds.
