Safe Ride Home Program

Information
Safe Ride Home is a Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) program that offers reduced-cost rides in taxis and transportation network companies (like Lyft and Uber) on targeted holidays and events to prevent people driving under the influence.

Overview

Nearly half of Portland traffic deaths involve impairment. Through Vision Zero initiatives like Safe Ride Home, PBOT is helping to reduce impaired driving. During past 12 months PBOT’s Safe Ride Home program helped fund over 3,000 rides so that people could celebrate responsibly and get home safely.

On certain holidays when people may be celebrating, the City of Portland's Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) offers coupons for discounted rides. These rides must start in the city of Portland and are only valid during the promotional period. We typically offer discounts on Taxi, Uber and/or Lyft rides.

The Safe Ride Home program is partially funded by the permit fees charged to taxi companies and the City fee charged for every Lyft and Uber ride taken in Portland. These fees also cover safety inspections and the PDX WAV program, which seeks to improve service for people who use a wheelchair or mobility device traveling in Portland.
