Update: Due to the windstorm and fires the week of September 8, followed by days of hazardous outdoor air quality, the tree contractor has not been able to work continuously. The tree cutting work is now expected to continue through Friday, September 25.

Original article: During the week of Tuesday, September 8, 2020, a contract crew will cut approximately 60 trees on a city-owned property on the south side of SW Multnomah Boulevard west of SW 40th Avenue. The property is immediately west of the Village at Multnomah Village Condominiums. The property will become a stormwater garden to hold and clean runoff from the SW Capitol Highway: Multnomah Village - West Portland project, which will construct sidewalks and bike lanes on SW Capitol Highway. The tree cutting is expected to last two to four days. Heavier excavation and construction work at the site will not begin until January 2021. Elsewhere in the project area, the same crew will cut two trees at the south end of SW 42nd Avenue next to Woods Creek Memorial Natural Area, the site of another proposed stormwater garden. All tree cutting is regulated by the City of Portland Title 11 Tree Code, which requires planting new trees or paying fees to make up for the loss of trees. The project will be planting nearly 400 trees to make up for trees cut in these stormwater basin areas and elsewhere along the project corridor.
