What construction impacts you can expect on SE 136th between SE Division and Foster.
Published

As you may have noticed, we kicked off construction for the SE 136th Paving and Sidewalks to Opportunity Project this month. We are very excited to begin delivering these improvements which are funded by the Fixing Our Streets program approved by Portland voters May 2016.

The project will transform SE 136th Avenue between SE Division and SE Foster into a 1.8 mile complete street by repaving the street, building continuous sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, better access to transit stops, protected bike lanes, stormwater improvements, new street trees, and upgraded traffic signals and street lighting.

We wanted to take this opportunity to keep you informed about work that will be taking place within the coming weeks and months.

Construction Schedule

Construction is expected to occur between June 2020 through June 2021. Between now and the end of July 2020, here is what you can expect:

  • Mobilization of construction equipment and temporary signage for a new pedestrian island and paving work from Division to Powell.

  • Communication with residents when there is any expectation of work happening on private property.

  • Relocating utilities like electric poles and water meters.

Given the size, length, and duration of this project, PBOT will provide monthly construction updates to residents via email. To sign up for updates, please visit the project website: www.portlandoregon.gov/transportation/136th

Here is a rough timeline of project elements (with some exceptions and overlaps):

  • Summer - Fall 2020 - Utility work, topographical survey, erosion protection, and vegetation removal

  • Fall 2020 - Winter 2021- Civil work including paving, sidewalks, curb ramps and stormwater infrastructure

  • Spring/Summer 2021 - Tree planting, striping, signals, streetlighting, electrical work, and protected bike lanes

Traffic impacts

Construction is scheduled to last approximately one year (until summer 2021) with work from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. During construction, there will be temporary lane closures on SE 136th Avenue and parking restrictions in place. Sidewalks will remain open. Flaggers will direct vehicle and bike traffic in the street.

Please travel cautiously, observe all lane closures and directions by reader boards and flaggers, and use alternate routes if possible. We are monitoring the current Covid-19 state of emergency closely and the schedule is subject to change.

Please note there are also construction projects happening on SE Powell Blvd. and SE Division St. The work taking place on SE 136th is separate from these projects but PBOT is coordinating detours and street closures holistically.
