Portland City Council Adopts 
Building a Better 82nd Avenue Plan

After two years of planning and public engagement, the Building a Better 82nd Avenue plan is now available to view online. This plan brings together past plans, current projects, and future projects into one comprehensive document, outlining a practical and visionary approach to improving safety and maintenance on this important Portland street. The plan will be presented to the Portland City Council on Wednesday, December 4.


Construction updates

Overview: December 16 - 20
Limited construction activity on side streets adjacent to 82nd Avenue, including: 

  • NE Milton Street east of 82nd Avenue
  • NE Fremont Street, west of 82nd Avenue 
  • NE Russell Street, east of 82nd Avenue 
  • SE Taggart Street, west of 82nd Avenue 

Overview: December 16 to December 27
No construction activity

Overview: December 30 – January 10  
Subject to change

  • NE Fremont Street, east of 82nd 
  • SE 82nd Avenue, between SE Mill and Division streets 

In addition to the above work, PGE is expected to energize the signalized bike and pedestrian crossing at SE 82nd Avenue and Knapp Street in early 2025.

2024 Construction Highlights 

What a year! In 2024, contractors with PBOT made critical fixes up and down the 82nd Avenue corridor.

Last week contractors with PBOT planted trees and additional landscaping at SE 82nd Avenue and Schiller Street. We anticipate the new traffic signal to be operational in early 2025.

In early December, contractors with PBOT planted trees and additional landscaping at SE 82nd Avenue and Schiller Street. We anticipate the new traffic signal to be operational in early 2025.

Here’s what we got done in 2024:  

  • Upgraded 245 street lights (over 70% of all street lights on 82nd Avenue) with a newer LED light 
  • Installed 54 new street light poles 
  • Upgraded 52 ADA corner ramps 
  • Improved signal timing and operations at 29 existing traffic signals
  • Completed 1 signalized bike and pedestrian bike crossing (6 additional crossings are nearing completion)  
  • Planted 5 trees  
  • Installed 4 safety cameras

TriMet is seeking diverse perspectives from residents, community organizations, business and property owners, and more. TriMet is working toward creating a Frequent Express bus rapid transit line along 82nd Avenue - one of the region's busiest bus lines - to address the community's needs and help foster a healthy, vibrant corridor. You can help!

Grants and programs available 

Local Small Business Repair Grants 

This program offers grant support to local small businesses. The Local Small Business Repair Grants are emergency funds that use funding allocated by City Council to provide support of up to $10,000 to local small businesses needing immediate repairs.

Mini-Grants for non-profit organizations available 

With Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF) mini grants, organizations can apply for up to $5,000 for activities that align with goals of addressing climate change and advancing racial and social justice.
