Critical Fixes: Near-term safety and maintenance improvements

High-visibility crosswalk installation continues this month

In August, contractors with PBOT began installing high-visibility crosswalks at 21 signalized intersections along 82nd Avenue as part of the 82nd Avenue Critical Fixes: Signing and Striping Updates Project. Adding high-visibility crosswalks at intersections with traffic signals helps make pedestrians more visible to people driving.

High-visibility crosswalks (sometimes called “continental-style” crosswalks) have thick lines parallel to traffic flow that allow drivers to see the crosswalk from further away.

In addition to high-visibility crosswalks, green bike boxes will be installed on SE Woodstock, SE Duke, and SE Flavel at the intersection of 82nd Avenue. Green bike boxes will help improve safety and visibility of people bicycling across 82nd Avenue at these locations.

Striping and signing work will continue through September. This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change.

Paving and safety improvements coming to SE 82nd Avenue south of Foster Road

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) will begin construction soon for safety and paving improvements on SE 82nd Avenue from SE Foster Road to SE Thompson Road (Clackamas County). ODOT will install pedestrian safety improvements including four Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), upgrades to curb ramps that meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements and new sidewalks in select locations.  The project will also include repaving SE 82nd Avenue in both directions between SE Foster Road and SE Lindy Street.

Construction is expected to begin in late summer/fall 2023 and continue through summer 2025. The project schedule is subject to change.

What to expect during construction

  • Travelers can expect daytime and nighttime lane closures on SE 82nd Avenue, with at least one lane open in each direction at a time. Lane closures will occur during non-peak hours except in limited cases.
  • There will be temporary accessible detour routes for people walking and rolling during construction.
  • Those living or working in the area may hear noise from construction. A 24/7 nighttime noise hotline is available for nearby residents and businesses to help resolve any ODOT noise-related concerns 24 hours a day: 503-276-7812.
