Critical Fixes: Near-term safety and maintenance improvements

Fresh green!

Contractors with PBOT installed green bike boxes this week on side streets, to help people more safely cross SE 82nd Avenue. As people drive or bike along SE Woodstock, SE Duke, and SE Flavel, they will see green boxes painted on the pavement just before arriving at 82nd Avenue. The paint makes drivers more aware of the potential for bike traffic in the area. And when people biking stop in the bike box, it makes them more visible and safer as they look to cross 82nd Avenue at these locations.

The bike boxes are part of our  82nd Avenue Critical Fixes: Signing and Striping Project

New bike box at SE Flavel Street and SE 82nd Avenue

Contractors with PBOT installed a green bike box on SE Flavel Street at the intersection with SE 82nd Avenue this week.

Striping and signing work will continue through September. This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change.

Street light improvements and pedestrian crossings starts this fall

Contractors with PBOT will begin work on pedestrian crossing and street light improvements this fall. Street lighting will be improved from NE Lombard to SE Clatsop. Six new signalized pedestrian crossings will be constructed on 82nd Avenue at NE Beech, Klickitat, and Schuyler, and SE Clinton, Ash, and Schiller.

Paving and safety improvements coming to SE 82nd Avenue south of Foster Road

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is making safety improvements for all users on SE 82nd Avenue (OR 213) from SE Foster Road to SE Thompson Road.

In addition to 1.65 miles of paving, safety improvements along the project corridor include:

  • New enhanced pedestrian crossings, or Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), at four intersections of SE 82nd Avenue at SE Cooper Street, SE Clatsop Street, SE Glencoe Road and parallel to SE Thompson Road (just south of SE Monroe Street/Boyer Drive).
  • New sidewalks roughly between SE Clatsop Street and SE Cornwell Street on both the east and west sides of the highway.
  • Accessible curb ramps (158 total) at intersections in the project area to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

Construction begins in fall 2023 and will continue through summer 2025.
