122nd Paving Project

Information
In the summer of 2026, PBOT will repave 122nd Avenue between NE Broadway and NE Glisan as part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining our transportation system. PBOT plans to leverage this paving to help create a safer street for all road users.

Latest Update

Paving of 122nd Avenue has now been pushed back to the summer of 2026. In advance, during the summer of 2025, BES upgraded the stormwater systems on 122nd Avenue in advance of paving. In early 2026, PBOT will upgrade the ADA ramps at the intersection of 122nd and Halsey.

Project Overview

PBOT plans to repave 122nd Avenue between NE Glisan and NE Broadway in the summer of 2026. Following this repaving, the road will be restriped to convert the existing parking to a bike lane, and the existing bike lane to a buffer.  The purpose of the project is to improve pavement conditions on 122nd as well as safety for all road users. The restriping will align with the vision outlined in the 122nd Avenue Plan completed in 2023 and is part of a much broader set of projects coming to 122nd over the next few years.

Additionally, the intersection of 122nd and Halsey will be modified to create continuous bicycle facilities on 122nd Avenue through the intersection, and separate people walking and biking from right-turning vehicles.

Project Goals

  • A Safer Street with Slower Speeds: We want 122nd Ave to be a safer street with fewer crashes, safer speeds, and a more welcoming environment for everybody.
  • Improve Access for People Walking & Biking: Whether you’re trying to cross the street, catch the bus, or get where you’re going on a bike, 122nd can be a stressful and unwelcoming environment. We want to fix that.
  • Develop a high-quality project with broad community support that supports adopted policies, meets city standards, and is delivered on-time and on-budget.

Community Engagement

Several projects on 122nd Avenue are currently in design, so outreach for this project was coordinated with other projects when appropriate. For the paving and restriping between NE Broadway and NE Glisan St on NE 122nd Avenue, PBOT staff reached out directly to businesses, property owners and residents directly on 122nd Avenue that would be impacted. We called, went door to door, and sent letters and postcards. We also held an in-person and on-line open house in February 2025 to get feedback. To get the word out about the open house we sent emails to community-based organizations, schools, and neighborhood associations. PBOT Communications also shared the announcement on social media.

Future 122nd Avenue Cross-section

After repaving, 122nd between NE Glisan and NE Broadway will still have two ten foot travel lanes in each direction separated by a ten foot center turn lane. The parking lane will be converted to a nine foot bike lane, with the current bike lane converted to a four foot buffer. The design will also include some medians and left turn restrictions as well as the removal of underutilized street parking to allow for the protected bike lanes.
