Overview
In late summer 2025, PBOT will repave 122nd Avenue between NE Glisan and NE Broadway. The paving schedule aligned with other planned improvements at the Halsey intersection so combining the projects together is more efficient. The purpose of the project is to improve pavement conditions on 122nd as well as safety for all road users. The restriping will align with the vision outlined in the 122nd Avenue Plan completed in 2023 and is part of a much broader set of projects coming to 122nd over the next few years.
Project Goals
- A Safer Street with Slower Speeds: We want 122nd Ave to be a safer street with fewer crashes, safer speeds, and a more welcoming environment for everybody.
- Improve Access for People Walking & Biking: Whether you’re trying to cross the street, catch the bus, or get where you’re going on a bike, 122nd can be a stressful and unwelcoming environment. We want to fix that.
- Develop a high-quality project with broad community support that supports adopted policies, meets city standards, and is delivered on-time and on-budget.
Community Engagement
Several projects on 122nd Avenue are currently in design, so outreach for this project was coordinated with other projects when appropriate. For the paving and restriping between NE Broadway and NE Glisan St on NE 122nd Avenue, PBOT staff reached out directly to businesses, property owners and residents directly on 122nd Avenue that would be impacted. We called, went door to door, and sent letters and postcards. We also held an inperson and on-line open house in February 2025 to get feedback. To get the word out about the open house we sent emails to community-based organizations, schools, and neighborhood associations. PBOT Communications also shared the announcement on social media.

Future 122nd Avenue Cross-section
After repaving, 122nd between NE Glisan and NE Broadway will still have two ten foot travel lanes in each direction separated by a ten foot center turn lane. The parking lane will be converted to an 9 foot bike lane, with the current bike lane converted to a 4 foot buffer. The design will also include some medians and left turn restrictions as well as the removal of underutilized street parking to allow for the protected bike lanes.
What is a Pave and Paint Project?
A scheduled maintenance repaving project provides an opportunity to consider changes to how space is laid out between the curbs to improve safety, access, and support a vibrant main street on NE Broadway. We want to use this opportunity to consider an improved future streetscape and put the street back better than the way it was before.
Pave and Paint projects are limited in scope, budget, and timeline. They seek to focus investments on lower-cost, yet high-benefit safety improvements. Types of changes within scope include striping changes to the roadway, floating curb extensions or median islands, ADA accessibility improvements (including at transit stops). Generally these projects try to avoid major changes to curb location, stormwater impacts, and major signal work.
These projects draw from a limited funding source and have to make judicious use of limited funds. Despite these limitations, they can 'claim space' in the right-of-way for future major capital projects.
This project will result in an updated streetscape for 122nd Avenue that prioritizes more space for people walking and biking. The project will include a new striping plan for 122nd Avenue and a bundle of lower-cost improvements along the corridor.
