NE 122nd Ave Crossings Project

Transportation
Engineering And Design
The NE 122nd Ave Crossings project will provide five new and/or improved crossings to help meet crosswalk spacing guidelines and improve safety and access along NE 122nd Avenue.
Construction 2025 and 2026

Project Updates

Construction of two new signalized crossings of 122nd Avenue, one at NE Davis and another at SE Clinton, will begin in the late spring or early summer of 2026. This project  will also fill lighting gaps on NE 122nd Avenue between NE San Rafael Street and SE Foster Street, and on NE 102nd Avenue between NE Sandy Boulevard and E Burnside Street. Funding for these crossings is through Fixing Our Streets.

The design of three other signals on 122nd Avenue (at/near NE Beech St, NE Russell St, NE Broadway St,) is nearing completion, and is in the right-of-way acquisition process. Portland City Council voted to accept federal grants distributed by Metro through the Regional Flexible Funding Allocation (RFFA) program which includes $6.4 million for this project. Construction of these three crossings is planned for the late summer of 2026. Crossing summaries can be found below:

Project Background

A high crash corridor, NE 122nd Avenue currently has long distances between safe pedestrian crossings. PBOT has received $5.6 million from Metro through the RFFA program to add three new enhanced crossings. PBOT is installing two additional crossings and lighting using Fixing our Streets funds in the same area. Locations were selected based on public feedback and staff analysis from PBOT's comprehensive 122nd Avenue corridor plan and include crossings at or near:

  • NE Beech St
  • NE Russell St
  • NE Broadway St
  • NE Davis St
  • SE Clinton St

Each crossing will include high visibility continental (zebra) crosswalk markings, streetlighting, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant curb ramps. Additionally, each crossing will be signalized with a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) and medians, Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons, or half signals.

Note: A previously proposed crossing of 122nd Avenue at NE Multnomah Street  was cut due to lack of budget, public feedback, and right-of-way complexities.

Community Engagement

In the summer of 2024, PBOT staff began engaging the area residents and property and business owners and key stakeholders such as schools and large property owners in the vicinity of the proposed crossings.

You can read a summary of the to date engagement activities below!

The project is currently moving to final design. During this time, any property owners whose property will be impacted by the work will be contacted by PBOT Right of Way staff. Otherwise, updates will be shared on the project website and through email newsletters until the project is ready to begin construction, estimated for summer 2026. Another postcard will be mailed to residents, businesses, and property owners adjacent to the crossings in advance of the work.
