9 - Transit stops

Information
The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is working with the community to develop a comprehensive plan for improvements along 122nd Avenue. This is Slide 9 of our online open house for the 122nd Avenue Plan: "What are we recommending for transit?"
On this page

Overview

This plan includes recommendations to improve transit performance and bus stops along 122nd Avenue. The following describes the recommendations for how to improve transit service and comfort while waiting for the bus.

Transit Priority Improvements

Bus riders along 122nd Avenue experience transit delay, including varying travel times and unreliable pick-up and drop-off times at bus stops. A primary contributor to transit delay on 122nd Avenue is due to congestion at major intersections.

The Rose Lane program—a joint PBOT and TriMet program—aims to get more Portlanders where they need to go more reliably and quickly with transit priority treatments. A “Rose Lane” is a transit route where buses and streetcars have priority on the road in congested areas. Not all Rose Lane projects will be red bus only lanes—there are over 20 different kinds of transit priority treatments that might be used for a Rose Lane project.

Line 73, which runs along 122nd Avenue, is identified as a transit line that experiences significant delay and would benefit from transit priority improvements at key locations. The intersection of E Burnside Street and 122nd Avenue experiences the most transit delay along 122nd Avenue. It is recommended that this intersection be redesigned as part of the Rose Lane project. Other potential locations for transit priority improvements include NE Halsey Street, SE Powell Boulevard, and SE Holgate Boulevard.

Bus Stop Improvements

This image is a map that shows bus stops along 122nd Avenue. It shows which bus stops have high, medium, and low improvement priority as well as which stops will be removed or relocated.

This plan includes recommendations to improve most of the bus stops along 122nd Avenue that could be implemented in partnership with TriMet. The types of improvements may vary by location depending upon the context, opportunities, and constraints at each bus stop. Generally, the improvements will focus on opportunities to provide:

  • More space at bus stops for people to comfortably wait for the bus and people traveling along the sidewalk to pass.
  • ADA accessible landing area and pathways for people who use wheelchairs or scooters to get on and off the bus and travel through the bus stop.
  • Space for TriMet to install benches and shelters when stops meet
    siting guidelines.
  • Lighting at bus stops to improve visibility and make transit riders feel
    more comfortable.
  • Designs to improve the cycling environment and reduce weaving between buses and cyclists.
  • Curb extensions, transit islands, or other designs to allow the bus to stop in lane.

These improvements will be implemented as funding becomes available. We recommend prioritizing these improvements, considering the following criteria:

  • Existing condition, deficiencies, shelters and need
  • Equity, using PBOT Equity Matrix scores
  • Ridership boarding activity at bus stops
  • ADA bus ramp deployment for use by People with Disabilities at bus stops

Based on the criteria listed above, these improvements have been organized into three priority levels

  • Higher priority: Higher priority for funding improvements, especially to create more space and add more shelters along 122nd Avenue.
  • Medium Priority: Next set of locations for seeking funding to make improvements, either to create more space and add benches or shelters; or move bus stops and shelters to better locations.
  • Lower Priority: Additional locations where improvements are recommended when funding can be secured.

Higher priority bus stop improvements are recommended at:

  • NE San Rafael Street, northbound and southbound
  • SE Lincoln Street, northbound
  • SE Bush Street, northbound
  • SE Boise Street, northbound and southbound
  • SE Foster Road, northbound

Medium priority bus stop improvements are recommended at:

  • NE Shaver Street, southbound
  • NE Fremont Street, northbound and southbound
  • NE Halsey Street, northbound
  • NE Halsey Street, southbound. It's recommended this bus stop move south of NE Halsey Street.
  • NE Glisan Street, northbound
  • SE Oak Street, northbound. It's recommended this bus stop move south of SE Oak Street.
  • SE Oak Street southbound. It's recommended this bus stop move south of SE Stark Street.
  • SE Lincoln Street, southbound
  • SE Division, southbound
  • SE Woodward Place, northbound
  • SE Powell Boulevard, southbound
  • SE Rhone Street, southbound
  • SE Bush Street, southbound
  • SE Holgate Boulevard, southbound
  • SE Ramona Street, northbound and southbound

Lower priority bus stop improvements are recommended at:

  • NE Shaver Street, northbound
  • NE Stanton Street, northbound. It's recommended this bus stop move north of NE Stanton Street.
  • NE Stanton Street, southbound. It's recommended this bus stop move south of NE Stanton Street.
  • NE Sacramento Street, northbound and southbound
  • NE Multnomah Street, northbound and southbound. It's recommended both of these bus stops move south of NE Holladay Street.
  • NE Glisan Street, southbound
  • NE Davis Street, northbound and southbound
  • Midland Library, northbound
  • SE Woodward Place, southbound
  • SE Harold Street, northbound
  • SE Harold Street, southbound. It's recommended this bus stops move south of SE Harold Street.

Bus stops recommended for removal include:

  • NE Wasco Street, northbound
  • SE Stark Street, southbound
  • SE Salmon Street, northbound
  • SE Main Street, southbound
  • SE Madison Street, northbound
  • SE Schiller Street, northbound
  • SE Reedway Street, southbound

These priorities may shift if an active project can be leveraged to install better bus stops.
