How To Apply for a Design Exception

For applicants whose installations do not meet the design guidelines, an exception process is available.

Exceptions will NOT be granted for the following safety issues:

  • Roof setbacks <50’
  • Intersection setbacks < 10’
  • Opaque enclosures
  • Roofed structures affixed to the building on the sidewalk

The exception process fee is $150.  

Review times change depending on workload. Applicants will be notified of a decision within 6-10weeks from their application submittal.

How To Appeal a Design Exception Decision

Portland City Code gives you the option of requesting a modification to some Transportation decisions through an administrative review by the Group Manager or Supervisor in a Reconsideration Conference. 

To request a review, download the Reconsideration Conference Request Form (below), fill it out and return it to the contact person listed on the letter or notice you received from Transportation. 

Requests for a Reconsideration Conference will not be accepted after 20 days from the date of the Design Exceptions Decision.
