Hello Portlanders,

We hope the first couple months of the new year have treated you well! The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) wants to keep you informed with information that may help with the use of your outdoor dining facilities.

Spotlight: The Run Pub

For this newsletter edition, we would love to spotlight The Portland Running Company and The Run Pub, a two-in-one business that has recently completed all of the design updates for the current cycle of Outdoor Dining and Retail permits. Owner, Paula Harkin, took some time to speak with us about her experiences using the space.

The Portland Running Company organizes running events throughout the Portland area, with a mix of streets and trails, including those in Forest Park nearby. These runs often end at The Run Pub, the business's on-site brewery. For several years, The Run Pub has used the street and sidewalk to host customers. Paula tells us that it's great to have an outdoor space for post-run beverages, “especially if customers might have worked up a sweat beforehand!”

Paula values the opportunity to use the street space available right in front of her building. She worked with contractors to improve her outdoor seating area as described by the new design guidelines and appreciated the level of detail in the design guidelines, “they were a good blueprint for my contractors to follow.”, Paula recalls.

Below are a few photos provided by Paula and PBOT Technicians highlighting the outdoor dining space.

Above is a picture of The Run Pub's permitted area before today's design guidelines were in place. Below are two pictures showing the street seat's transformation since the business applied for their new permit. The upgrades do a great job at separating the dining area from the street. Also, take a look at how flush that platform is with the curb!

Below is a picture of a picnic table in The Run Pub's permitted street seat. This is a great example of an ADA compliant picnic table: one which allows a wheelchair user to roll underneath the table. Our ADA design requirement is here to make sure that all Portland residents and visitors can participate in this creative and enjoyable way to use our public streets and sidewalks.

If you have a current application and need help with making design updates, please reach out to your assigned permit technician or email our general inbox, OutdoorDiningPDX@portlandoregon…. You may qualify for a design exception if you need one.

Thank you to Paula and The Run Pub for taking part in this Spotlight!
