The 10-cent local gas tax within the Fixing Our Streets program includes funding for reducing speeds on neighborhood streets with high speeds and high traffic volumes. The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) focuses on projects in areas with lower incomes with less transportation investment.

This is a map showing projects to reduce speed on neighborhood cut-through routes. It shows the locations for speed bumps, speed cushions and other traffic calming projects on streets throughout the city. PBOT understands that this map is not accessible for users of assistive technology. How were the projects chosen?
PBOT developed an evaluation matrix combining traffic operations like automobile speeds and volumes, policy considerations like priority safe routes to school corridors, and neighborhood impacts using PBOT's Equity Matrix. Streets with the highest speeds and traffic volumes in areas of highest needs were prioritized.
Funding is from the local 10-cent gas tax within the Fixing Our Streets program.
Program highlights
NE 119th Avenue Traffic Chicane project
Traffic chicanes were installed NE 119th Ave in spring of 2026. Traffic chicanes help slow vehicles by requiring people driving to navigate the street more cautiously. PBOT has received speeding complaints from residents on NE 119th and the traffic chicanes are expected to reduce speeds.
The traffic chicanes are installed using more temporary materials. The pilot project's goal is to determine if chicanes can reduce speeds more cost-effectively on narrow streets compared to speed bumps. Other streets in the pilot are SE 62nd and SW Burlingame avenues.
Traffic speed data is collected both before and after implementation to determine impacts to the street. SW Burlingame Ave is the first location in the pilot project.
Why traffic calming on NE 119th Avenue?
NE 119th Avenue is near Sacramento Elementary school. Nearby streets have traffic calming speed bumps. This project aims to lower speeds similarly to other streets and cost less than a typical speed bump project.
SE 62nd Traffic Chicane project
Traffic chicanes are coming to SE 62nd Ave in spring or summer 2026. Traffic chicanes help slow vehicles by requiring people driving to navigate the street more cautiously. PBOT has received speeding complaints from residents on SE 62nd Ave and the traffic chicanes are expected to reduce speeds. The traffic chicanes will be installed on SE 62nd Ave from SE Clatsop to SE Flavel streets.

Funding
Funding comes from the local 10-cent gas tax within the Fixing Our Streets program. From 2024 to 2028, $2 million is set aside for traffic calming projects. Several projects are funded from other Fixing Our Streets funds set aside for safety improvements in neighborhoods.
