A smoother street is coming to NE Halsey Street from 57th 60h avenues

Travelers and residents are encouraged to avoid driving through the area if possible

Beginning Monday, May 11, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will be repairing and repaving NE Halsey around NE 57th and NE 60th avenues as part of the bureau's $9.7 million NE 60th Avenue and Halsey Street Area Improvement Project. From May 11 to May 14, vehicle traffic will be limited to one-way eastbound only between NE 53rd and NE 60th avenues. Westbound traffic will be directed to a signed detour via NE Glisan Street. The closure will begin on Monday, May 11, and is expected to reopen the morning of Friday, May 15.

Crews will remove asphalt and rebuild the intersection at NE 57th Avenue and NE Halsey Street, with work extending to the west side of NE 60th Avenue.

Once this phase is complete, PBOT will provide one week of advance notice before starting reconstruction of the eastbound side of NE Halsey between NE 53rd and NE 60th avenues. The eastbound detour via NE Glisan Street is scheduled to begin May 26 and remain in place until the morning of May 30.

Maintenance crews will work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Detours will remain in place overnight throughout construction. Travelers should expect delays, proceed with caution, follow directions from flaggers, and use alternate routes when possible. Local access to homes and businesses will be maintained. Sidewalks will remain open for pedestrians at all times. Public transit will also be detouring around the construction zone; riders should check TriMet.org for updated service information. All work is weather-dependent, and schedules may change.

This paving work at NE Halsey and 57th Avenue is part of the NE 60th Avenue and Halsey Street Area Improvement Project. As part of this project, PBOT is replacing traffic signals on NE Halsey at 47th, 57th, and 60th avenues, repaving the roadway, reconfiguring lanes to add a center turn lane, widening sidewalks on NE 60th Avenue, and enhancing crosswalks.

The project budget is $9.67 million and is funded through House Bill 2017, Transportation System Development Charges, the City's General Fund, and the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF).
