The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is nearly finished with construction work on the SE 162nd Avenue Safety and Access to Transit Project!

The last major phase of the project is painting the street pavement lines, or striping.

Striping on SE 162nd Avenue from SE Powell Boulevard to SE Stark Street will take multiple days to complete and is dependent on drier and warmer weather. If weather permits, crews maybegin pavement striping on Tuesday April 4, 2023.

What to expect during striping:

  • During striping, expect delays and flaggers holding or stopping traffic as the striping vehicle progresses up and down SE 162nd Avenue.
  • No full travel lane closures are expected. No vehicle detours off of SE 162nd Avenue onto other streets are expected.
  • A work crew will follow the striping vehicle up and down SE 162nd Avenue and hold all traffic entering or exiting side streets for 1-2 minutes. This lets the striping material dry so that it doesn’t get on resident tires or smudge after being applied to the asphalt. We ask travelers to please be patient as these delays will be very short.
  • No on-street parking on SE 162nd Avenue will be permitted during pavement striping. Please follow the instruction signage on the street to avoid being towed.
  • Striping is weather dependent and the schedule will change if there is cold or wet weather in the forecast. We’ll continue to share more detailed construction updates as the work plan is confirmed.

There will be three phases to completing the striping work:

  • South of SE Division Phase: Long striping lines on SE 162nd Avenue between Powell Boulevard and SE Division Street – roughly 3 days
  • North of SE Division Phase: Removal of current lines and striping of long lines on SE 162nd Avenue between SE Division Street and SE Stark Street – roughly 5 days
  • Detailed Work Phase: Detailed crosshatching stripes throughout SE 162nd Avenue – multiple days but less impactful to the traveling public.

Changes to SE 162nd Avenue on-street parking happening once striping is complete

Last month construction crews installed parking signs that are currently covered in plastic bags along SE 162nd Avenue. These “No Parking” signs will go into effect after street striping is complete.

The removal of on-street parking near crosswalks, intersections, and bus stops will help improve the visibility of everyone using SE 162nd Avenue, including people walking, rolling, and driving.
