Through engaging with local stakeholders, PBOT developed a concept for NE Broadway that addresses community concerns and supports a vibrant, safe, and accessible main street.

Through a bundle of lower cost improvements, this design from NE 7th Ave to NE 26th Ave provides more space to people walking and biking while also lowering traffic speeds and supporting adjacent businesses.

Full Project Benefits:

  • Five new pedestrian crossings on NE Broadway
  • Two bus stop improvements
  • Reduced speed limit to 20mph with updated signal timing
  • A better managed on-street parking strategy
  • A wide buffered bike lane with concrete protection at intersections
  • A new protected bike lane connection to the 20’s Bikeway.

Project Elements that Changed Since Winter Online Open House:

  • Refined and updated bus stop locations
  • Refined bike lane design to be compatible with potential future changes
  • Reduced speed limit from 25mph to 20mph through business district
  • Angled-in parking between NE 17th to NE 24th is now front-in, rather than back-in
  • New crosswalks on NE Weidler St will be included in separate paving project (see more information below)

The final designs are now available on the project website! The page provides an overview of the design and links to a map with more detailed design specifications.

This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change.

NE Weidler Street Repaving and Safety Improvements

PBOT will also repave NE Weidler Street from 15th Ave to 24th Ave this summer. We plan to use this opportunity to implement several key safety and access improvements along the corridor, addressing some long-standing neighborhood concerns and requests.

About NE Broadway Pave & Paint Project

In the summer of 2025, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will repave NE Broadway as part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining our transportation system. This Pave and Paint project seeks to make major improvements on Broadway between NE 7th Ave and NE 26th Ave within a limited budget, to make the street better in the near-term, and set up the street for future investments.

PBOT crews will begin the first phase of construction for the NE Broadway Pave & Paint in February. As a part of this work, the corner ramps at intersections will be rebuilt to meet modern ADA standards. PBOT crews will begin work at unsignalized intersections between 11th to 22nd Avenue. This spring, work at signalized intersections will take place. This summer, PBOT will repave NE Broadway and construct additional safety improvements.
