Engagement Summary and Key Thematic Takeaways

In the summer and early fall of 2024, PBOT staff worked closely with business owners on Broadway and nearby neighborhood stakeholders to understand key issues and desires for improvements that could be realized through this paving project.

PBOT staff provided eight presentations and discussion sessions with key groups including:

  • NE Broadway Business Association (July and November)
  • Sullivan’s Gulch Neighborhood Association (August and November)
  • Irvington Community Association (August)
  • Go Lloyd Board Members (November)
  • Portland Bicycle Advisory Committee (September)
  • Oregon Walks (September)

In September of 2024, PBOT staff led a community walk attended by dozens of neighbors, business owners, and representatives of these key stakeholder groups to tour the corridor, provide information about the project, and gather input on priorities and needs.

Some key themes from this round of engagement include:

  • Vehicle speeds are too fast and there are too many cars just passing through the main street.
  • A desire to reduce the number of travel lanes on Broadway to make the street safer and more welcoming.
  • Safety concerns, especially for people walking and biking.
  • A need for more frequent and safer pedestrian crossings, especially at unsignalized intersections.
  • A desire to improve the substandard bike lane creating more space and separation from vehicle traffic.
