Crews and contractors with the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will reconstruct and repave SW Fourth Avenue between Lincoln and W Burnside streets. Includes safer crosswalks, upgraded ADA curb ramps, new protected bikeway, better street lighting, and a business access and transit lane.

What’s happening now?

6-11-25 Update: Weekend Paving and Road Closure on SW 4th Avenue Begins Friday, June 13

Paving continues on SW 4th Avenue this weekend between SW Market and Clay streets. Work begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 13, with a full closure of SW 4th Avenue from Harrison to Market starting at 9 p.m. The street will reopen by 5 a.m. on Sunday, June 15.

Crews will be working overnight, and nearby residents and businesses should expect construction noise on Friday and Saturday nights.

Detour Information:

  • Northbound traffic on SW 4th will be detoured at SW Harrison to SW Naito Parkway. Drivers can return to SW 4th by taking SW Clay back from Naito.
  • Eastbound traffic on SW Market will be detoured at SW 5th to Harrison, then routed via SW Naito back to Market.

What to Know:

  • Sidewalks will remain open.
  • Transit riders should check TriMet.org for service updates.
  • As always, please travel carefully in the work zone and follow detour signs.

What's next?

 Over the next two months, crews will:

  • Pour permanent concrete corner ramps in locations that were temporarily reopened with asphalt in support of Rose Festival
  • Complete the concrete, striping and painting work on SW 4th Avenue between SW Lincoln and Market
  • Test and activate the new traffic signal equipment at SW 4th and College and SW 4th and Hall
  • Fully reopen SW 4th between SW Lincoln and SW Market
  • Continue working their way north upgrading ADA corner ramps
  • Begin work at the northern end of the project at the intersections of SW 4th and Burnside and SW 4th and Ankeny 

Schedule

Construction started in May 2024. PBOT expects the full project to be completed by the end of 2025. 

Project Components

  • Repave SW Fourth Avenue from Lincoln to W Burnside streets
  • Safer crosswalks and curb ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) from Lincoln to W Burnside streets
  • A protected bike lane along the westside of SW Fourth Avenue from Caruthers to W Burnside streets.
  • A business access and transit (BAT) lane between Sheridan and Mill streets. BAT lanes give priority to buses and people turning into driveways or cross streets.
  • A bus stop platform at SW Fourth Avenue and Hall Street
  • A new traffic signal at SW Fourth Avenue and College Street
  • Updated streetlights between Sheridan and W Burnside streets
  • Improve existing traffic signals at the intersections of SW Hall, Taylor, Sheridan, Caruthers, Lincoln, Montgomery, Market, Clay, Jefferson, and W Burnside streets

Funding

This $21 million project is funded by the voter-approved 10-cent gas tax known as Fixing Our Streets, maintenance funds, as well as transportation system development charges, with additional contributions from Prosper Portland and TriMet.
